How do scoliotic spines with low stiffness and viscoelastic properties react to the application of spinal orthoses?

چکیده
Objective In the management of moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), spinal orthosis is generally applied. Nonetheless, the time to reach its maximal corrective effect after donning or the time to return to the original scoliotic curvature after doffing may not be well understood because the spine has low stiffness and viscoelastic properties and continuous radiographic assessments are invasive to patients. This study aims to investigate the time dependent response of scoliotic curvature to spinal orthosis by using three-dimensional non-invasive clinical ultrasound (3-D CUS).

Time-dependent response of scoliotic curvature to orthotic intervention: when should a radiograph be obtained after putting on or taking off a spinal orthosis?
STUDY DESIGN A prospective study; 2-group design. OBJECTIVE This study aims to assess the time response of scoliotic spines to orthotic intervention using clinical ultrasound. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Patients with moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis are generally advised orthotic treatment. However, the time to reach maximum correction after donning spinal orthosis or the time to re...
متن کاملبررسی تاثیر کشش (Halo Traction) بین دو عمل جراحی آزادسازی و فیوژن قدامی و خلفی ستون مهرهها در درمان اسکولیوز
Background: The currently accepted treatment of scoliosis are bracing and surgery. Two-stage anterior and posterior spinal fusion is used to correct scoliosis. It seems that the application of a longitudinal force to the axis of the spinal column as a means of stabilizing by halo traction, may increase the correction of the curve. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of halo tractio...
متن کاملThe Height-Width-Depth Ratios of the Intervertebral Discs and Vertebral Bodies in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis vs Controls in a Chinese Population
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients have been reported to be taller and more slender than normal controls, suggesting less mechanical stiffness of their trunk and spine. For assessment of mechanical stiffness, to our best knowledge this is the first to study height-width-depth relations at the level of the individual vertebra and disc in 3-D and to evaluate its relation with the Cobb...
متن کاملValidity of stiffness estimates of individual lumbar motion segments obtained in the intact spine
J.H. van Dieën Degeneration, injury and surgical interventions may alter the mechanical properties of spinal motion segments, but the quantification of these alterations is problematic. Manual or instrumented loading of single segments in the intact spine as applied intra-operatively may overestimate the mechanical properties of this segment, because the applied load is partly sustained by the ...

Wrist orthoses (also known as splints, braces, or supports) are commonly used to support or restrict the motion of a weak or injured wrist. These orthoses generally function by stiffening the wrist joint. Therefore, choosing the proper orthosis (or improving orthoses) requires that we understand their stiffness properties. In this study, we present a method for measuring the stiffness of wrist ...
